Call for Papers
The international conference The Museum Reader: what practices should 21st century Museums pursue, how and why?, organised by Instituto de História da Arte of Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea – Museu do Chiado, aims to propose thematic lines and noteworthy points to stimulate thought, reflection and debate of new realities, practices and working conditions identified in museums in the 21st Century. Its purpose is to analyse and systematise new methods and paradigms, trends and different practices and ways of imagining the role of art institutions in the context of the present-day art scene.
There will be particular emphasis on the following themes: 1. Museums in the transition from the 20th to the 21st Century; 2. The museum and the neoliberal concept of culture; 3. The paradigmatic transformations of art institutions in the context of the current social, economic and political order; 4. Institutional critique as investigation of the framework and functioning of art institutions; 5. The museum as a place of negotiation and conflict; 6. The potential of institutions and the new institutional sphere: new Institutionalism, radical museology, critical museology; 7. Critique and experimentation in art institutions; 8. Institutional and non-institutional practices within the museum; 9. Challenges for museums and art institutions inside new art practices; 10. The future identity of art institutions.
Abstracts (no more than 300 words) accompanied by a short bio (about two paragraphs) should be sent to the Organizing Committee at [email protected] until January 13. Participants will be notified by the end of January, and the conference program will be published in mid-February. The languages of the conference are English and Portuguese. A selection of papers from the conference will be published as a special number of the Wrong Wrong magazine (ISSN 2183-5527). A conferência internacional The Museum Reader: what practices should 21st century Museums pursue, how and why?, organizada pelo Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa e pelo Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea – Museu do Chiado, tem por objetivo propor linhas temáticas e pontos notáveis para pensar, refletir e debater novas realidades, práticas e condições de trabalho detetadas nos museus deste século XXI. Pretende-se analisar e sistematizar novos modos e paradigmas, tendências e diferentes práticas e formas de pensar o papel das instituições artísticas no contexto do atual panorama artístico.
Em foco estarão os seguintes temas: 1. Os museus na passagem do século XX para o século XXI; 2. O museu e a conceção neoliberal de cultura; 3. As transformações paradigmáticas das instituições artísticas no contexto da atual ordem social, económica e política; 4. A crítica institucional enquanto investigação dos contornos e funcionamento das instituições de arte; 5. O museu como lugar de negociação e conflito; 6. O potencial das instituições e a nova esfera institucional: o novo Institucionalismo, a museologia radical, a museologia crítica; 7. Crítica e experimentação nas instituições artísticas; 8. Práticas institucionais e não institucionais no museu; 9. Quais as exigências e desafios das práticas artísticas contemporâneas para os museus e instituições artísticas. 10. A identidade futura das instituições artísticas.
Os interessados deverão enviar o resumo (não mais que 300 palavras) acompanhado de uma breve nota curricular (com cerca de dois parágrafos) para o Comité de Organização através do e-mail [email protected] até 13 de Janeiro. Os participantes serão notificados até ao final de Janeiro e o programa da conferência será publicado durante o mês de Fevereiro. As línguas oficiais da conferência são o inglês e o português. Os papers selecionados serão publicados num número especial da revista Wrong Wrong (ISSN 2183-5527).
